About us
Welcome to New Mills School Library Our library itself is situated in a beautiful domed building. The educative scenes depicted on the outstanding stained-glass windows are the very foundation of our library policy. We encourage students to read for pleasure and information, and have worked hard to update our stocks of fiction and non-fiction to facilitate this.
Our multi-media facilities are excellent. We provide twelve networked computers, which are available throughout the school day. Our software packages are updated frequently and cover all subjects, extensively. We have all relevant careers software, World Book Online and the student library catalogue: Searchstar.
We have an extensive range of DVDs and videos, and offer a VHS-to-DVD service for all departments. Our collaboration with the media department also means that we have laptops, digital cameras and video cameras available for students’ use, all sited in the library.
We have a colour and black and white printer linked to the computers. Students have a free printing allocation which is updated monthly and can be increased on request.
Competitions & Events
We frequently hold competitions and provide students with opportunities to take home excellent prizes such as book vouchers and book box selections. These prove popular with our younger clientele. We are set to have a Scholastic Book Fair on 7th February 2008 and welcome students, parents and staff members to browse for a book!
During December 2007 before the Christmas break, we ran ‘Booked Up’ week. All students were given a sample of the twelve books they could make a first, second and third choice from. They all received a book and most received their first choice – apologies to those who didn’t!
Other exciting news is the opening of our Natwest Bank Account Scheme, 20th January 2008. This facility will enable students to save money. We are working in conjunction with a Natwest Business Adviser, and will operate the bank in the library, one lunchtime per week.
N.B. All students must obtain parental consent before signing up! |
