Many opportunities exist for students to develop their interests. Great importance is attached to lunchtime and after-school activities as well as educational visits.

Sport - New Mills School has an excellent record in sport and some notable successes have been achieved over the years. School team practices are arranged and competitions and matches are organised with other schools.
Curricular enrichments - Extra tuition and help is provided in some subjects. Private study rooms, the Computer rooms, the Library and the Careers Resources are available at lunchtime. Some clubs provide activities which add to, and build on, the students' classroom experience (Language Clubs, Science Club, Drama Club, Art Clubs etc.). The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is offered up to Gold Level. The Young Enterprise scheme offers students another route to develop their individual skills.
Music - This is a strong feature of the school' s provision. Weoffer peripatetic music lessons to all interested students. Orchestra, Jazz and Swing Band, Gaelic folk groups and Choir practices are all regular after-school activities and evening concerts take place once a term, showcasing student talent. Many students form their own groups and the annual "Battle of the Bands" is a popular event.
Educational Visits - a great variety of visits are organised every term in this country and abroad. Exchange visits are established with towns in Germany and France and we are always looking at new ways to expand these cultural experiences.
Sixth Form Activities - The Sixth Form has its own committee which, with staff assistance arranges visits, debates and social events. The Sixth Form is also involved in community service, charity work, Young Enterprise, teacher auxiliary help and primary school help. There are regular visits to places of higher education. Former students of the school are encouraged to return and relate their experiences to encourage other students |
